The 10.000 Hours Stubborn Geniuses

August 30th, 2007 · No Comments

Solving the Fermat’s last theorem vs. unlocking the mystery of the Linear B ancient syllabary.

When we started our first business in 1999, my partner Matej contemplated that success finally will result from the sheer amount of time that one is able to invest into a goal. He argued that no matter how good the competition is, if you put twice as much time and effort into solving a problem (e.g. creating a better product), chances are you will ultimately defeat the competition.

Malcolm Gladwell (blog), author of best-selling Blink and The Tipping Point, presents this point in a fascinating speech with deep analysis of pre-modern and modern geniuses. He talks about the importance of stubbornness and collaboration in problem-solving, and how long* it takes to master any challenge. He also takes notice of how the current educational system wrongly prepares and selects its best talent to tackle the complex problems of the modern world.
