Taken at Apple Store in Palo Alto from an iPhone. Immediately sent to my Gmail. First impressions?

After the initial lust, I was almost about to write I am never going to use it because of various very silly mistakes and missing things (such as no copy/paste function, no bulk select/delete, no zoom etc.). BUT - I immediately felt in love with it - the very first moment I got it in my hands. It’s undoubtedly the most beautifully and ingeniously crafted device in the entire history of the electronics industry.

    So, bought it? :)

I wouldn’t go as far as saying I will never own one, but I’m certain I won’t own this version. There are just too many things wrong with it for me.

    How it works

If you want to activate your iPhone, you need to become contract-subscriber of AT&T for a minimum of 2-years, with high cancellation fees (175$) and a return-product policy. In order to do so, you need a social security number and an address in the US. If you don’t sign the contract with AT&T (which as a European you can not) your phone is a useless brick (don’t even show the main menu).

Yes, we are getting back to the AT&T monopoly times.

There is a way to become a prepaid iPhone subscriber, but is not really available online..Well, there is apparently a trick to transform you beautiful brick in a useful mp3 player and browser in Europe.

I know and I know people who intend to buy it nevertheless. Question is more what prevails in a fan, dislike for these obstacles or wish for objects possession.

Personally I dislike lack of tactile feedback, closeness of platform and generally bad experience with Apple enough, that I have zero intention of buying one. However, home full of Apple stuff proves I’m a bit of a slow learner so I won’t commit to saying I’ll never buy Apple again either.

I’ve been in a pickle whether to buy it as well. The fact that it is locked to AT&T obviously is not good, given the amount of travel I am expecting over the next two years. I also dislike the fact that there is no copy/paste function or sending texts to multiple people at the same time. I would also like an RSS reader as well as the shopping/movie time/gas station widgets that I have on my laptop.

However, I’d have to agree that this piece of ingenious technology has to be the slickest designed consumer electronic in a very long time. Just the way its built and the user interface is marvelous. Now all Apple has to do is get 3G into it, and add those features.

    I think you bought it.
